The mission of Information and Educational Technology (IET) is to create and support an information technology environment that enhances the ability of the UC Davis community to teach, do research and provide public service. In support of the University's mission, IET delivers an infrastructure of technological services appropriate to the requirements of the campus community. Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS), a department within IET, is responsible for the development and delivery of voice, data, and video services for a campus of 40,000 faculty, students, and staff. Network Services & Engineering is responsible for the long-range planning, design, engineering, and technical advancement of the campus communications infrastructure including Outside Plant, structured cabling and network equipment installation. NSE manages the communications system design guidelines and specifications, estimating, planning, inspection, and installation services for capital construction projects, major building renovations, and audio-visual design for General Assignment Classrooms (GAC).

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Engineering Services Supervisor, plan, design, and oversee engineering of the campus telecommunications infrastructure. This position is part of Network Services & Engineering within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) group of Information & Educational Technology (IET) department. Responsibilities include working independently or in conjunction with the campus Design and Construction Management department, serving as the project manager for major campus telecommunications projects and providing consulting services directly to campus clients. Also, oversee work performed by contract consulting/engineering firms and installation contractors, provide technical assistance and support to other EIS and IET units on existing network infrastructure.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires a valid California Driver's license and is subject to DMV pull-notice System.
  • This position requires Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification, which must be completed within 6-months of hire date.
  • May work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Subject to Medical Surveillance procedures (such as TB Screening, Rubeola titer, Respirator Fit testing, amongst others) and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University policy
  • Safety training and certifications required are in accordance with Federal and State Laws, Regulations, and University policy, may include but are not limited to silica, lead, asbestos etc.
  • Adhere to workplace safety practices, read information communicated about workplace safety, complete required medical surveillance procedures, safety training and certifications on time, and report any workplace safety issues promptly to their supervisor or the designated safety coordinator.
  • Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions.
  • May work occasional weekends. Vacation is restricted during peak work periods

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience planning, designing, engineering, and installing telecommunications infrastructure including Outside Plant, structured cabling, and voice/data networking equipment.
  • Experience planning, estimating, budgeting, and managing multiple telecommunications projects of varying complexity and scope.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and construction drawings

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of EIA/TIA and BICSI standards, National Fire Protection Code including the National Electric Code, grounding, bonding, power, and protection of telecommunications plant and equipment.
  • Oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical staff, faculty, students and other stakeholders.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification: 

  • Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Experience with Microsoft Project or other project management software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Visio.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Organizational skills to determine priorities, delegate responsibilities, exercise independent judgment, and take appropriate action to resolve problems.
