Departmental Overview

The immediate office manages the VC Finance division in the areas of human resources, strategic planning, financial engagement, training, and communications. It supports the Vice Chancellor and helps lead strategic projects for the division.

Job Summary

This job reports to the Director of Operations and Communications and provides critical communications support to the Immediate Office and the Finance Division.

The Communications Specialist manages the communications program for VC Finance, with moderate guidance and an understanding of complex communications requirements. Leads expert written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication strategy. Develops and manages complex communications and change management plans. Drives strategic communications for the division and partners with leadership to provide recommendations and expert advice. Must be able to take responsibility for a diverse set of tasks, including strategy, writing, editing, project management, accessibility, website development, and divisional collaboration.

Responsibilities
  • Works with management and clients to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communications plans and projects. Regularly represents the divisional leadership with departmental leaders. Makes recommendations and decisions regarding communications strategy and change management implementation.
  • Represents the division with campus partners and leaders, and participates in campus communications groups. Maintains a high level of organizational knowledge. Maintains good working relationships with divisional leaders and campus partners, collaborating closely with disparate groups. Able to reconcile different opinions and objectives.
  • Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Partners with the digital communications lead to manage website strategy and content.
  • Advises and consults with departmental administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution. Able to both develop communication strategies and plans and implement those plans.
  • Ensures production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints. An effective writer, able to speak to multiple audiences and reconcile conflicting points of view when necessary. Able to perform multiple tasks within a specific time frame and adept at recognizing which tasks must take priority.
  • Identifies specific communications needs and partners with the organizational leads to create and manage communication processes.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications. Solid skills in creating, developing, and implementing comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and finance.
  • Knowledge of digital communications, website design, and accessible communications.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to various sets of audiences. Solid written, verbal, and editing skills.
  • Expert interpersonal communication, active listening, and political acumen skills.
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,600.00 - $140,400.00
