Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $138,200 to $153,860/yr. 

Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $112,100 to $216,500/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Student Resource Building, Student Life Suite

Working Days and Hours: M-F 8am-5pm (some nights and weekends required)

Type of Remote or Hybrid Work Arrangement, if applicable: This is an in person position, however hybrid work schedule would be considered as long as hybrid arrangements are approved by the Division of Student Affairs. The University has the authority to change or revoke hybrid scheduling with reasonable notice. Incumbents must be available to be in the office full time should operational needs require it.

The office is responsive to both individual and community-wide student needs and often works to address or resolve student concerns that arise out of unique circumstances (whether on or off campus) that impact a student's academic progress. Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, the Dean of Students has a multifaceted role in the Division of Student Affairs and is the primary face of the campus and senior administration for students. Keeps abreast of student political issues and activities for the campus administration; monitors protests, demonstrations and rallies; and manages student emergencies. Oversees the administration's work with and in support of student organizations and serves as a liaison to student governments. Takes a primary role in solving problems on a wide array of issues and works closely and collaboratively with the AVC for Student Life in managing and solving the most challenging and complex issues related to students. Provides divisional management for and serves as a sub-control point for the Office of Student Conduct, the MultiCultural Center, Storke Student Publications, Civic and Community Engagement, and Student Engagement and Leadership. Supervises the Coordinator for Student Success and Community Standards. Oversees the Demonstration Response Team for critical or controversial events and protests as well as the bias incident response protocols for students, in partnership with the AVC. Represents the division of Student Affairs on campus committees, contributing to general management, strategic planning, policy development, and issues response. Represents the campus on the system-wide associate vice chancellor/dean of student's leadership group. Must possess a broad knowledge of university policies and procedures (including both campus and system-wide policies); have a strong theoretical and philosophical foundation in student affairs, student co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and student development; be effective in interpersonal communications, problem solving, and public speaking; and have a firm foundation in co-curricular and extracurricular program development, in leadership studies and education, and in diversity and multiculturalism. Must have exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills, and must be able to relate effectively to faculty, students, and staff. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training 
  • 7-9 years Work in higher education/student affairs with progressive management experience.
  • 4-6 years Leadership, supervisory, and fiscal management experience.
  • 4-6 years Leadership responsibility in the student affairs field required.
  • Must possess a broad knowledge of university policies and procedures (including both campus and systemwide policies).
  • Have a strong theoretical and philosophical foundation in student co-curricular and extracurricular activities and student development.
  • Be effective in interpersonal communications, multi-pronged problem solving, conflict resolution, and public speaking with diverse constituents. 
  • Have a firm record showing commitment to diversity and equity work and understanding of issues and concerns of a diverse student body.  
  • Have a firm foundation in co-curricular and extracurricular program management and in leadership studies and education.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

50% Dean of Students - The Dean of Students has a multifaceted role in the Division of Student Affairs and is the primary face of the administration for students. Keeps abreast of student political issues and activities for the campus administration and advises the Chancellor, Associate Vice Chancellors, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on issues as they arise. The Dean monitors protests, demonstrations and rallies and manages student emergencies, interacting with faculty, parents, community members, and the press as necessary. The Dean oversees the administration's work with and in support of student organizations and serves as a liaison to student governments. The Dean takes on a primary role in solving problems on a wide array of issues as well as fostering community amongst students. Some examples include addressing diversity concerns; consulting with departments on changing student needs and demands; and overseeing campus events that require special handling due to their intrinsic importance or controversial nature. Other responsibilities include interpreting and implementing policy related to freedom of speech and freedom of expression, coordinating diversity training and education initiatives (including serving as a diversity trainer), and providing support for an array of student cultural/identity communities. The Dean of Students educates students on these issues and sets expectations for civility, respectful discord, and student commitment to UCSB's Principles of Community. Interacts directly with the Office of the Chancellor, UC Office of the President, Academic Senate, and other senior campus leadership providing information and advice on a range of student-related issues requiring excellent judgment, initiative, diplomacy, and political acumen. Serves as an expert resource for the Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, AVC for Student Life, senior officers and members of the executive management team on student development theory, higher education policy, campus activities and risk management, policy and usage of compulsory student fees, and leadership education programs. Represents the campus and the Division of Student Affairs in the community, and on a variety of campus and system-wide committees. 

40% Management of Student Affairs Departments - The Dean provides divisional management for and serves as a sub-control point for the Office of Student Conduct, the MultiCultural Center, Storke Student Publications, Civic and Community Engagement, and Student Engagement and Leadership. Works with department heads in defining and achieving departmental mission and goals, in problem solving, in maintaining sound fiscal management, and in ensuring compliance with UC policies and procedures and state and federal laws. The Dean is responsible for management-level decision making on departmental personnel, policies, and budget; supervises and evaluates the department director; and provides advocacy at the division level for departmental and programmatic needs. Supervises the Coordinator for Student Success and Community Standards. Oversees bias-incident response, and the Demonstration Response Team (DRT). 

10% Student Affairs Student Cabinet - Serves as the leader of the Student Affairs Student Cabinet, contributing to student development and planning, student policies and procedures, and leadership and programming planning for the Division of Student Affairs. Makes recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for new initiatives and programs to serve students.
