DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Film & Digital Media Department includes 19 faculty members, approximately 600 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students; our facilities include the Communications Building, a wing in the new Kresge Academic Center, and the forthcoming Social Documentation Lab in the University's Westside Research Park. Specialized facilities and equipment include a 90 seat theater with a Barco Digital Cinema Projector, a motion capture stage, VR equipment, and more.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Film and Digital Media Department Manager; the Film and Digital Media Technical Director oversees the daily operation of the department's technical services, manages all Film and Digital Media (FDM) spaces and facilities, and provides direct supervision and backup to FDM Operations staff. In consultation with the department chair and department manager, the FDM Technical Director manages all of the technical functions and services of the department; is responsible for the development, implementation and execution of policy related to space and equipment; manages the department's operations budget; and serves as the project manager for all FDM operations and facilities projects. The incumbent will analyze and develop proposals for future technical, equipment, space, and budget needs.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $80,300 - $85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

30% - Technical/Production Unit Management

  • Manages the technical and operational functions of unit. Oversees loan and checkout programs of departmental equipment to faculty and students. Oversees equipment and related inventory management practices.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repair of technical equipment. Responsible for overseeing the repair and maintenance of equipment, including camera systems, audio recorders, editing and recording workstations, classroom media equipment, video/data projectors and computers and peripherals. Works with FDM Operations and IT staff to identify and correct configuration and equipment problems and makes determination on repair processes.
  • Oversees the installation, replacement and modification of workstations, peripherals, video/data projectors, and video audio/data networks, including patch bays.
  • In consultation and coordination with FDM's Information and Technology (ITS) staff, works with Arts Division ITS liaison for department's computing and IT needs.
  • Meets regularly with FDM department chair, department manager, operations and IT staff to discuss the technical needs of the department; meets with other FDM faculty and attends FDM faculty/department, Arts Division, and other campus meetings as needed.
  • In consultation with the department chair and FDM operations staff, drafts, revises, oversees, and enforces policies and procedures related to equipment.
  • In consultation with the department chair, researches and purchases equipment, services, furnishings, tools and materials in compliance with policy and procedures. Works with campus vendors to facilitate purchases and services.
  • Serves as "backup for all supervisees, responding to equipment checkout, omni-lock programming, and classroom support needs during absences and as needed.
  • Assists faculty in research, investigation, evaluation and purchase of software and hardware pertinent to instructional curriculum. Provides technical assistance and make recommendations based on needs of program relevant to instruction.
  • Consults with Arts Division, Equipment Management and Insurance and Risk Management on inventory and insurance issues.
  • Represents departmental interests when serving on Arts Division and UCSC committees.

30% - Facilities, Space, and Project Management

  • Manages department space and facilities Including planning, operation, security, reporting, and maintenance.
  • Manages FDM facilities, equipment and technical services to meet the needs of department programs. Designs, drafts and makes proposals for modification of facilities focusing on compliance, efficiency, usability and the long-term needs of the department.
  • In consultation with the department chair, drafts, revises, oversees, and enforces policies and procedures related to FDM facilities. Works with department chair and FDM administrative staff to review space requests and coordinates space usage and support for FDM and outside clients.
  • Meets regularly with FDM department chair, department manager, and operations staff to discuss the facilities needs of the department; meets with other FDM faculty and attends FDM faculty/department, Arts Division, and other campus meetings as needed.
  • Supervises and coordinates the repair and maintenance of facilities. Works with campus and off-campus architects and engineers.
  • Provides professional project management by planning and monitoring construction and installations, keeping track of expenses and records, and effectively communicating workflow, timelines and updates to appropriate faculty, staff, students, and colleagues.
  • Oversees disaster preparedness and environmental health and safety, the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP). Oversees American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and related aspects of building maintenance.
  • Works with appropriate campus staff and units (ITS facilities coordinator, Physical Plant, campus project managers) to effectively communicate information and plan for construction and maintenance projects, outages, and safety and evacuation procedures that directly or indirectly affect FDM facilities and spaces. Works with FDM department chair, department manager, and other relevant units to design and order signage as needed.
  • Serves on relevant campus facilities, space and safety committees.

20% - Personnel Management/Supervision

  • Serves as FDM Operations team leader. Supervises, trains and mentors FDM Operations staff.
    Maintains and improves communication practices to support the daily operation and project management of FDM Operations. Schedules regular team and one-on-one meetings with FDM technical staff.
  • Works to maintain a supportive and productive working environment, utilizing leadership, team-building, interpersonal, and communication skills. Identifies and offers training and development opportunities for FDM technical staff. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, campus constituents, and outside vendors.
  • Provides consistent and effective performance feedback to supervisees. Writes and delivers annual performance evaluations. Proposes merit recommendations and awards.
  • In consultation with the department chair, department manager, Arts Division senior staff, and UCSC Human Resources, designs job descriptions, mounts recruitments, schedules and conducts interviews and hires staff employees as needed.
  • Supervises FDM Lab Assistants who are responsible for equipment checkout lab, general technical support (including classroom and events) and purchasing. Oversees the equipment checkout lab manager's hiring of student assistants.
  • Communicates information about and coordinates training for FDM staff, faculty, and student employees related to disaster preparedness, Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP), American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, diversity awareness and other programs.
  • Has a firm understanding of and works to achieve campus and departmental affirmative action and diversity goals. Works to promote a safe and supportive environment for all staff, faculty, students, guests, and visitors.

15% - Budgetary Management and Fiscal Control

  • Manages the FDM operations budget (in coordination with Department Manager) to achieve effective utilization of available resources. Oversees FDM operations income and expense accounts (including discretionary and one-time funds) that cover operating, equipment, facilities, maintenance, production, and insurance.
  • Monitors and evaluates current and long-term expenditures. Initiates, coordinates and approves departmental fiscal transactions. Keeps Chair informed of financial status of unit and advises faculty and staff on budgetary procedures.
  • Works with Arts Division Business Office and other campus units to facilitate transfers and resolve financial issues.

5% - Maintenance of Skills

  • Actively pursues opportunities to advance personal knowledge and command of information relevant to this profession including management and supervisory skills.
  • Systematically maintains familiarity with current technologies applicable to administrative systems and curricular needs of a program in film and digital media.
     

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience in arts management such as a post-production or audio/video production facility, or the equivalent.
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, and time management skills sufficient to prioritize work and function independently under pressure of competing deadlines and frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of electronic multimedia and audiovisual systems and camera equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with persons at all levels in the organization, in both individual and committee settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
  • Working knowledge of basic electronics, trouble shooting techniques, and simple repair methods for video and audio systems.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the historical and recent advancements in media, equipment, audiovisual and other technology to support long-term planning objectives.
  • Familiarity with safe working practices as they relate to video production studios, with the ability to develop and monitor safety.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities planning and analysis, including budget and inventory management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-project environment.
  • Commitment to quality work as demonstrated by strict attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills with knowledge of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Experience interpreting and complying with regulations, policies, and practices; ability to draft, implement and enforce policies and practices as needed.
  • Demonstrated managerial and supervisory experience with proven leadership ability.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills sufficient to disseminate information in an articulate and concise manner and with diplomacy; ability to draft professional reports and deliver presentations.
  • Demonstrated skill in using software and technology tools (calendar and email systems, video conferencing, document sharing tools, spreadsheets, databases, word processing) for project management; communication; meetings (scheduling, agendas, notes); and creating and maintaining records.
  • Macintosh computer skills, with working knowledge of software applications used in film and digital media production (Final Cut Pro X, QuickTime Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, Compressor, etc.)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • General knowledge of higher education policies, practices and procedures.
  • University degree and/or technical certificate.
  • Knowledge of film and/or art history, theory, and practice.,
