Position Summary:

 

Led by the Vice Chancellor for Research and his senior leadership team, the Office of Research (OR) works with other campus units to foster an environment for research and artistic activity that facilitates the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in many forms to all levels of society. OR provides central campus administrative support for UCI's research programs. OR's core administrative units include Research Administration (RA), University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR), Administrative Operations and Research Program Services, Research Development, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. Administration/Financial Operations/Research Programs provides administrative and network and computing support to OR's core administrative units as well as over 30 Organized Research Units and Special Research Programs that report to OR.

 

Having similar functionality to an academic school's dean's office, this position is responsible for business and financial operations within the Office of Research. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of annual and permanent budgets, allocations, financial review, implementation and maintenance of effective accounting systems processes, and management of financial resources for the Office of Research Coordinating Point for multiple research units across campus. The incumbent has broad financial and administrative responsibilities for managing, analyzing and monitoring budgets of assigned areas, allocations and resources of multiple Special Research Programs (SRP) and Organized Research Units (ORU) including general operations budget, permanent budgets, contract and grants, endowment funds, gifts and sales and service funds. Uses advanced professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Incumbent will manage OR commitments for cost-sharing, Seed Fund Awards, Conference Awards and other annual and multi-year research support allocations, approx. $30M annually providing detailed financial reports to leadership. Incumbent works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors to assist with annual reports and long-term projections. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for business operations, conduct routine financial audits, provide training to new staff. As needed, incumbent will assist research units with pre and post award administration, serve on various campus committees and provide high-level review of complex financial transactions. Contacts are both internal and external to the department at all levels.

$90,500.00 - $169,700.00 (Annual Salary)
  Required:  
  • 5-10 years of experience in duties of Accounting / Finance / Pre and Post award Grants Management
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge of finance policies, federal contract and grant policies, practices, and systems. 
  • Ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources. 
  • Advanced ability to effectively present complex finance related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. 
  • In depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. 
  • Advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. 
  • In depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Ability to function as a member of a team. 
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
