DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Scout is a division of the UC Santa Cruz Extension. While UC Scout's home campus is located at 3175 Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara, the UC Scout team is a fully remote team, with individuals making occasional visits to the campus as needed. UC Scout serves high school students, providing online high school courses for students and curricula for educators.

UC Scout's growing team comprises six departments: instructional design, media, academics, support, outreach, and business intelligence. The team consists of approximately 50 full-time staff and 70 part-time employees. UC Scout works closely with UCSC Extension support staff, including IT, finance, and the office of the Dean to support UC Scout's goals.

JOB SUMMARY

The instructional Designer uses multimedia development and instructional design skills and best practices to help shape curricular content into coherent instructional modules that employ multimedia and a variety of interactive, web-based tools aimed at encouraging the engagement of high school students and other learners in knowledge acquisition.

The role involves a high degree of collaboration, flexibility, and diplomacy as well as project management and creative problem-solving. The incumbent solves complex content or delivery-related issues in conjunction with technical teams and occasionally interacts with senior internal and external personnel. The Instructional designer normally receives little direction for ongoing course development assignments and works most closely with full-time teachers and subject-matter experts.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $81,872 - $90,041/year.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

60% - Course Design

  • Applies instructional design skills to articulate course design, including editing and alignment of standards-based objectives and outcomes, review of supportive and inclusive learning activities and assessments, and selection of appropriate technologies and tools.
  • Supports faculty and staff in creating multimedia content, including interactive learning activities and video or audio components. Oversees the production of course content according to an established schedule.
  • Consults with subject matter experts on best practices to determine methods for delivery of course content and effective use of technology that promotes learner engagement and knowledge acquisition. Reviews written work with scrutiny, provides direction and feedback, and performs revisions.
  • Conducts appropriate job and task analyses in the context of instructional design of technical or specialized training.
  • Actively seeks out knowledge of new and emerging learning technologies.

20% - LMS Maintenance

  • Deploys content on learning management platforms (Canvas LMS).
  • Reviews and resolves reported issues post-launch. Collects and analyzes feedback on course performance and needs for revisions as needed. Recommends strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Provides support for testing content and tools to meet ADA requirements. Researches and documents copyright for embedded media and other non-faculty-created content.

10% - ID Project Management

  • Oversees detailed schedules within an established project plan for multiple projects. Provides project management throughout course development and revision processes to ensure projects are completed on time and meet quality standards, and keeps others informed of progress against the schedule.
  • Facilitates project team meetings for new course projects, and as needed throughout the development process.

10% - Collaboration & Communication

  • Ensures that quality standards, intellectual property guidelines, ADA, and copyright requirements are met. Upholds instructional design standards, templates, and business processes, to be used across all courses or programs of courses.
  • Works in highly collaborative environments effectively, including other instructional designers, technology staff, faculty, and teaching assistants. Demonstrates diplomacy and tact in all communications.
  • Works collaboratively in a diverse environment to prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis, and develop recommendations.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience working in the functional area (instructional design) and understanding of how work within one course impacts a program or work being done on other courses.
  • Thorough attention to detail and analytical skills with the ability to conduct comprehensive instructional analyses and develop clear instructional recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills and negotiation skills; demonstrated collaborative skills, flexibility and diplomacy; demonstrated ability to persuade, lead, motivate, instruct, and act as part of an effective team.
  • Strong written communication skills demonstrating ability to lead, motivate, instruct, and act as part of an effective team.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, creative team environment under tight deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including standard LMS functionality, needs analysis, e-learning video, learning outcomes and assessment design, design for DEI and accessibility, and instructional approaches in fully online environments.
  • Thorough knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich digital content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
  • Thorough working knowledge of applying K-12/high school learning theories and educational methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, strategize, and deliver major instructional design deliverables for organization-wide initiatives.
  • Thorough knowledge of copyright law, ADA compliance in electronic environments, and other regulations and guidelines that relate to online course development and distribution.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree including substantial coursework and research in the fields of instructional design, curriculum development, pedagogy, or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems (Canvas LMS, DesignPLUS, Google Workspace).
  • Thorough knowledge of course evaluation practices, exemplifying mastery in quality assurance methodologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
  • Teaching Credential or other/equivalent experience or training.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

  • This is a fully remote position, and the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
