Department Description
The CEF (Controlled Environment Facility) is a central facility of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. It is a campus wide facility available to all faculty and students on a recharge basis. The facility contains about 180 specialized controlled environment units and associated support infrastructure to allow users to culture biological materials under a wide range of reproducible (controlled) environmental conditions.
Job Summary
Under supervision, work with the CEF Manager to carryout daily routine maintenance tasks of the 180 controlled environment units housed within this campus facility. Assist technicians with emergency repairs, operational malfunctions, and chamber installations. The Laborer will Learn and apply industry-specific techniques and best practices under the guidance of senior team members.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must wear proper clothing to work within chamber including close toe shoes, pants covering legs, and safety glasses are required.
- Must be able to perform work with hazardous materials, industrial equipment, and loud noises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Experience using a wide variety of hand tools, including but not limited to wrenches, pliers, screw drivers etc. for the repair and construction of facility equipment.
- Experience using power tools, such as power drills, circular and reciprocating saws, drill press, bandsaw, etc.
- Experience with computer programs, such as Excel and MS Word.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
- Organized skills to complete job assignments
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact effectively, and efficiently with a diverse group of staff, students, and technicians.
- Moderate computer skills to operate a personal computer for communication (email & word processing), organization and data visualization (excel, Google Sheets)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred License/Certification:
- Electrician, mechanic, construction, power utility technician trade school certification or Associates degree in related field.
Preferred Education/Experience:
- Training/Experience working with/repairing electrical equipment and/or circuitry above 50 volts.
- Electrical skill, experience and knowledge of electrical hazards and practicing safe electrical work practices and techniques.
- Electrical experience to safely troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and install facility and growth chamber electrical components, such as solenoids, heaters, pumps, motors, proportional valves, lights, ballasts, etc.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
- Knowledge and understanding of the communication network relating to the growth chamber control systems, and chamber alarm systems and how they interact with the campus alarm system.
- Knowledge of lighting systems including spectral quality, intensity effects, etc., related to growth chamber operation.
