Job Summary

Under general supervision of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program Associate Director serve as the Shelter Medicine and Surgery Clinical Supervisor for the Shelter Medicine Rotation. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of the Small Animal Hospital, serve as the Shelter Medicine and Surgery Clinical Instructor for senior students enrolled in the VMTH Shelter Medicine and Surgery Rotation. Coordinate student scheduling, communication, and performance evaluations. Occasionally serve as a relief vet for the Program Supervising Veterinarian.

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM degree with a minimum of 5 years of veterinary experience substantially related to shelter medicine including, high- volume/high-quality spay/neuter surgery, medical diagnosis and treatment and infectious disease control in an animal shelter setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time experience directly supervising and instructing veterinary students while they assist with and perform high quality / high volume spay/neuter and other soft tissue surgeries, in a non-stressful manner while providing an excellent educational experience.
  • Ability to research and develop teaching materials for adult learners, as well as conduct animal shelter-specific topic rounds with veterinary students.
  • Thorough current knowledge of soft tissue surgery techniques, particularly spay/neuter surgery, including pediatric spay/neuter, high-volume/high-quality spay/neuter, feral cat spay/neuter and ancillary surgeries such as laceration repair, mass removal, enucleation, and limb amputations on dogs and cats.
  • Interpersonal, written and communication skills to work collegially with shelter staff, veterinary and other students, residents, UC Davis staff, faculty, volunteers, and the public.
  • Skills to provide instruction and appropriate supervision to shelter staff, students, volunteers, veterinary residents during stressful and emergency situations.
  • Skills to work with minimal supervision and provide appropriate supervision to students and staff to meet the caseload and workload demands of the surgery rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating common animal shelter computer database systems such as Chameleon.
  • Experience with or willingness to pursue knowledge and capability for more advanced soft-tissue surgical procedures is considered beneficial.
  • Spay/neuter experience with other species, such as rabbits.

Department Overview

Work with the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program and the VMTH to oversee the clinical training program for students. This position is responsible for helping to maintain an open and positive relationship between Student training program, UC Davis, and the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Provide direct supervision of Animal Health Technicians and other Veterinarians as needed. Where needed, concerns regarding the shelter and the practice of shelter medicine should be escalated to the Koret Shelter Medicine Program Associate Director. Whereas the Associate Director of the Small Animal Hospital, VMTH and the Koret Shelter Medicine Program Associate Director should be consulted jointly regarding questions about the rotation and student learning.
