Be part of an internationally recognized and accredited laboratory that provides expert DNA testing for various animal species. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory provides animal parentage verification, identification, forensics services, genetic diagnostics, and genetic research for a broad range of domestic species as well as primates and wildlife species. We are looking for a representative to work in this non-profit laboratory that is part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and strives to provide highly accurate DNA testing for animals while also promoting education and scientific advancement in animal genetics. **VGL is currently located on the Davis campus but will be relocating to AggieSquare on the UC Davis Sacramento campus ~ Summer of 2025.

Position 1: 10:00AM - 7:00PM

Position 2: 12:00PM - 9:00PM.

Both are Monday-Friday and will be 100% on site, in Davis until Summer of 2025 and then it will be AggieSquare location in Sacramento.


Job Summary

Under direct supervision in the Service unit, perform PCR procedures, determination of required primers and testing, loading samples on ABI 3730 sequencers/Agena MassArray, or any other platforms in use by the VGL, and perform basic laboratory maintenance. Additionally, under close supervision, in a training capacity, learn to generate genetic data for various species using a wide variety of marker panels, PCR protocols, and instrumentation as required to meet needs of external clients and researchers; and learn to perform DNA fragment analysis using STRand software.

Budgeted Salary Range: Initial placement will be between $25.75 - $26.35/Hour, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

·       Ability and visual acuity for manipulating testing materials, samples, precision electronic equipment and computer terminals quickly, safely, and accurately.

·       Ability to lift 50 lbs. of laboratory supplies and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       This position's anticipated working hours will be from 10:00am – 7:00pm M-F. However, adaptability to a fluctuating workload is required: must be able to work flexible hours including the possibility of working Saturday mornings; vacations must be scheduled at times when case load is light.

·       Must conform to federal, state and county regulations for safe handling of biological materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience performing PCR procedures beyond college coursework under multiple conditions and deadlines.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Demonstrated skill and strict attention to detail to consistently work with speed, precision, and accuracy and to accommodate fluctuating sample numbers, as well as large sample numbers, and ensure an appropriate turnaround time for test results.

·       Demonstrated skill operating and programming PCR machines and multichannel electronic micro-pipettors and knowledge of sterile technique and the skills to prevent contamination of DNA samples and primers.

·       Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

·       Demonstrated skills to follow complex written and oral instructions and maintain accurate records as well as follow laboratory protocols and safety regulations.

·       Demonstrated skills in mathematics and chemistry to perform calculations and accurately prepare reagents, buffers, and dilutions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience working in a service laboratory which has high volume of samples and demand for fast turn-around.

·       Experience in primer preparation and multiplexing.

·       Experience in ABI 3730 sequencer.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Chemistry/molecular biology background or sufficient experience to understand chemical properties of critical reagents in PCR reactions.
