Job Summary

 

BIS2B Teaching Lab Coordinator


Under the general direction of the Academic Coordinator, manage the teaching laboratory operations for UC Davis's largest enrollment introductory biology course, which covers topics of evolution & ecology. This includes planning materials, equipment, and staff necessary to meet the needs of the laboratory portion of the course.

Evaluate and recommend purchase of lab materials and equipment and curate and maintain a collection of non-vertebrate animal and botanical specimens used in the department's lab courses.

Contribute to design, display and educational texts. Supervise undergraduate students for animal care, cultures, and lab set-up. Coordinate safety and building maintenance for areas in the Katherine Esau Science Hall assigned to EVE.

Provide technical support for upper division courses EVE administered through the Department of Evolution & Ecology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or a related discipline.
  • Experience providing course support in a large teaching lab setting including participation in and coordinating lab set up (enrollments up to 1440 students for one quarter)
  • Organizational skills to prioritize workload, manage multiple projects and ensure undergraduate workers remain on task.
  • Ability to work independently on projects and to set goals and accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • Scientific knowledge of species with skill to maintain marine and freshwater organisms (plants and animals), botanical material, insect colonies, and protozoan cultures.
  • Knowledge and skills in construction and maintenance of seawater systems and how to maintain proper water chemistry.
  • Writing, charting, editing and proofreading skills to compose lab instructions for the lab manual and for in-lab displays, charts of lab setup, organization and storage and to create teaching demonstration material and safety posters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in standard lab chemical use, disposal and safety.
  • Familiar with major topics covered in a course on evolution and ecology
  • General knowledge of microscopy and other techniques used in an introductory biology course.
  • Mechanical skills to troubleshoot and diagnose problems with equipment and make minor repairs as needed.
  • Knowledge of AV and video equipment to support teaching needs.
  • Knowledge of budget and UC Davis purchasing procedures.
  • Knowledge of campus EH&S and Yolo County CUPA regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Supervisory skills to recruit, train and coach students.

Physical Demands

  • Lift boxes, microscopes, aquaria, equipment and plant material weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to manually manipulate objects with precision.

 

Work Environment

  • Work with insects, spiders, and terrestrial arthropods
  • Work with hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals following UCD Safety protocols.
  • Laboratory safety training is required
  • Work occasional overtime including evenings, weekends and holidays due to operational needs.
  • Work an occasional adjusted work schedule.
  • Vacation periods must coordinate with course needs.
