Under close supervision, the Staff Research Associate 1 will coordinate work with multidisciplinary team. They will assist with conducing outreach, field and laboratory work related to irrigation and nutrient management in orchard and vineyard cropping systems. They will work with the UC Advisor in grant writing, data collection, data analysis, as well as report and article writing. They will coordinate and participate in outreach extension efforts including workshops, trainings, and help develop educational materials.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Pay Scale: $25.75/hour to $28.07/hour

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct research activities on a day to day basis for field research. Perform various field procedures to assess and record population levels, disease severity and/or damage. Assist with data collection in already-established experimental management study plots throughout the State of California. When need arises, assist with establishment of new study plots. Properly packaging and labeling samples; recording GPS locations of samples and other environmental information on data sheet. Determine plot design and determine method and application of chemical treatments. May install irrigation and fertigation equipment, maintain plots. Coordinate field activities with researchers and co-workers.

Analyze data and summarize results from fuels and management plots and assist with placing the analysis in a meaningful ecological context. Enter data from sheets into necessary computer applications such as Excel or ArcGIS. The candidate will be expected to collect, process, and manage data from the experiments. The candidate will be expected to complete lab calculations. Conduct the appropriate statistical analysis and produce summary statistics, tables, maps and graphs.

Collect and analyze data for writing up results for direct use in journal articles. Prepare drafts for journal article. Analyze data and summarize results in a meaningful context. Write reports based on data collection. Provide information to faculty for indirect use in journals and papers and respond to faculty inquiries. Assist the project leader in collecting background literature for new projects. Present data in appropriate written and graphic formats.

Using computer resources, design and edit public education materials (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, posters, flyers, brochures).

 

Requirements:

  • Degree and/or strong education and experience in specific scientific area of focus.
  • Ability to compile and interpret complex research results.
  • Ability to transform data appropriately for statistical analysis.
  • Experience writing reports on data analysis and for publication materials.
  • Knowledge of data collection and ability to input data into appropriate computer software.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis procedures.
  • Knowledge of the scientific method.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
