DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Writing Program provides instruction for the UC systemwide and UC Santa Cruz writing requirements, including the University of California Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), the Multilingual Curriculum (MLC), and the UC Santa Cruz General Education (GE) Composition Requirement. The writing faculty is composed of 6 Senate Faculty and 45-50 Lecturers. The program also employs 40-60 undergraduate peer tutors. The Writing Program administers an annual budget of approximately $3 million and offers approximately 300 courses annually while serving a population of 3,900 to 4,200 undergraduate students.

JOB SUMMARY

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced academic adviser. Provides advice to students on the full range of requirements for a department, college, or school with a wide variety of course requirements. Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $66,900 - $77,100/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Advising
 

  • Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the Writing Program.
  • Works with the Registrar, Admissions, and other colleges and universities on articulation matters.
  • Provides overall undergrad advising and undergrad program support through student's UCSC career including: assisting students in completing writing requirements, alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts, and similar issues, applying articulated courses to program requirements.
  • Monitors and evaluates student completion of academic requirements, providing information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility, requirements such as honors programs, awards, and scholarships.
  • Identifies students with progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the program.
  • Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and / or assistance from other units.
  • Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and / or ways to complete writing requirements that may not be clearly defined.


25% - Program Administration
 

  • Advises department on scheduling needs for students and requirements completion.
  • Responsible for the annual catalog and program statement including curricular changes and new or revised course submissions.
  • Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues.
    *Provides reporting and data analysis in support of successful program administration and campus student success goals.
  • Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair / dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies.
  • Represents department (and divisional) viewpoint and needs on campus wide undergrad related meetings and committees. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact for colleges and academic advisors on the writing program.
  • Provides administrative support for student placement processes.


25% - Communications
 

  • Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization and makes referrals to help students with the completion of their writing requirements (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges/ Schools, transfer center, academic departments, graduate division, etc.).
  • Manage all aspects maintaining and updating of the writing program website under the guidance of the program chair and manager. Develop expertise on the campus' preferred content management systems (CMS) through training and collaboration with Humanities Computing Services.
  • Compose and send departmental, divisional, and campus wide communications, such as newsletters, FAQs, program updates, registration management, relevant to the writing program.
  • Advertise writing program courses and events to undergraduates across campus.
  • Communicate with CCI and CEP about catalog updates and program statements.


5% - Events and Special Projects
 

  • Prepares materials for undergraduate admissions events such as admitted student weekend and orientation.
  • Represents program and provides overview program advising at campus fairs, as well as various outreach fairs for HSI, DSAS, UE, colleges, etc.
  • Provides assistance for Fall welcome reception.


 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling theories, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools. Thorough knowledge of college / school policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities accordingly.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent computer skills including use of word processing, collaborative file sharing systems, databases, including ability to extract and analyze data.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening and public speaking.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity skills to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including time management, electronic and paper file management, and prioritization of tasks.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of UCSC computer applications, databases, or the equivalent (InfoView, AIS, CCLP).


 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
