The University of Tennessee Health Science Center's College of Dentistry is located in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The mission of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is to improve the health and well-being of Tennesseans and the global community by fostering integrated, collaborative, and inclusive education, research, scientific discovery, clinical care, and public service. The UT System, through its multiple campuses and institutes, serves the people of Tennessee and beyond through the discovery, communication, and application of knowledge. In 1911, the University of Tennessee launched its Memphis campus solely dedicated to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy quickly flourished and became individual colleges within the university.
Founded in 1878, UTHSC's College of Dentistry is the oldest dental college in the South and the third oldest public college of dentistry in the United States. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredits the programs in dentistry. This accreditation permits qualified college graduates to apply for all state and regional board examinations in the United States. As an institution of higher education, the College of Dentistry is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) as part of the regular accreditation process of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
The college offers a full range of post-doctoral training in endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics. Also offered is a two-year program in dental hygiene.
