School Safety Coordinator
Position open until filled
Salary:  $45,842 - $57,078 DOE (for 185 day work year)   Class Summary:
Under the immediate supervision of the School Safety and Security Manager and guidance and direction of the School Administrator, employees in this classification perform a variety of tasks and functions which contribute to safe school environments and promote a positive school climate.  This specific position is primarily located at Wasilla High School but will provide support at other district facilities as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Prefer 2 years of college from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • CPR, first aid, and AED training preferred.
  • Prefer two years of prior experience working in the safety and or security field.  Prefer experience working with school age children or in a public school setting.
  • Must be able to exert 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. 
Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Maintains high visibility throughout the school building and grounds.
  • Proactively monitors school buildings and grounds to identify problem areas and/or safety/security concerns that need correction and either addresses or reports findings to appropriate personnel according to established guidelines. Ensure safety & security related work orders are input and completed in a timely manner for safety related items.
  • Responds to problems of student tardiness, delinquent behavior, parking violations and vandalism activities in coordination with School Administrators.
  • Anticipates and intervenes in potential and actual incidents where students, staff or property may be at risk of harm or damage within prescribed guidelines. 
  • Assists District Safety and Security Manager with events and training on safety and security program initiatives.
  • Coordinate and ensure compliance with all safety measures and drills to include fire evacuation, earthquake, and lockdown, safety/security inspections, etc.
  • This position requires a consistent transition to on-call status for security assistance at various schools within the district in addition to providing support and site visits to partner schools as identified by the District Safety and Security Manager.
  • As directed responds to complaints, incidents, and hazardous situations.  May be asked to conduct inquiries of reported or observed incidents.     
  • Understands OSHA regulations and implements the principles of fire safety, industrial hygiene, and emergency procedures. 
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with school staff, students, parents, law enforcement and child protection agencies.
  • Assists certificated school staff with various tasks to ensure the safe and productive operations of the classroom.
  • Supports the implementation of school-wide discipline and may be asked to monitor students during in-school suspension or other like consequences. 
  • Provides presence at after-school activities as requested by School Administrators.
  • May work with staff in developing and implementing student activities and programs designed to reduce risk, enhance students' sense of safety and promote a safety conscious school culture. 
  • May be required to perform additional related tasks as required by the School Administrator and/or District Safety and Security Manager.
  • Will be required to perform additional related tasks as required by the District Safety and Security Manager and/or School Administrators.
  • May be required to move from one school to another to cover other School Safety Coordinator absences.
Skills:
  • Extensive knowledge of established emergency procedures that would apply within a school setting, and capability to respond accordingly.
  • Understanding of strict confidentiality guidelines and ability to comply.
  • Ability to complete fair and impartial incident investigations, hazard/risk assessments and inspections, and written reporting/notification.
  • Ability to work with designated policies and procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the assigned school(s).
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to perform and be proficient with basic computer skills and programs.
  • Strong time management skills.
