Employment Status: Full-Time

Hours: 36 hours/week (72 hours bi-weekly)

Shift: 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM

Position Reports to: Emergency Department Manager

 

Department Description:

The Emergency Department provides care to patients across the lifespan, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly patients. The department operates in a fast-paced environment requiring strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and teamwork to meet continually changing patient needs.

As Charge Nurse, you are responsible for both direct patient care and assigned management responsibilities to support the efficient operation of the department.

 

Job Summary:

The Emergency Department Charge Nurse is directly and indirectly responsible for specific management responsibilities and for providing prescribed medical and nursing treatment to patients.

The Charge Nurse evaluates and prioritizes activities to meet the changing needs of the department. This role ensures appropriate staffing, coordinates patient flow, communicates critical updates, and supports the overall functioning of the unit. If the assigned Charge Nurse is unavailable, another qualified RN may assume the role.

 

What You'll Be Doing Day to Day:

  • Making staffing assignments based on determination of total nursing needs of patients
  • Coordinating assignments according to patient census and acuity, considering staffing resources, staff skill level, needs of orientees, and continuity of care
  • Reassigning staff in response to changing department needs and reflecting changes on the daily assignment sheet
  • Reviewing staffing for the current and upcoming shifts
  • Receiving notification of staff sickness or absence and communicating with the nursing supervisor/manager
  • Coordinating the filling of staffing vacancies with nursing supervision
  • Coordinating patient flow within the department based on nursing staff availability, room availability, and equipment needs
  • Communicating with team members, medical staff, and nursing supervision regarding patient status updates and department issues
  • Notifying the nursing supervisor immediately of urgent problems or occurrences
  • Communicating equipment and supply needs to appropriate departments or nursing supervision
  • Reporting equipment failures to BioMed/Plant Operations for repair
  • Facilitating student experiences on the unit
  • Coordinating lunch relief for staff
  • Communicating admissions to the nursing supervisor from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. for room assignments; coordinating room assignments with appropriate units during 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. shift unless otherwise directed
  • Completing the assignment sheet and providing report to the oncoming Charge Nurse, including patient status and unit conditions
  • Providing functional work direction to Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and clerical staff
  • Performing additional duties as assigned within scope of responsibility

 

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Ohio
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • ACLS required within one (1) year of hire
  • PALS and TNCC certification required within two (2) years of hire
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, medical staff, and employee groups
